Broad Brook Wetland Park officially opens in Yarmouth

Jun 28 2013

Attendees at the Grand Opening of the Broad Brook Wetland Park enjoy a tour of the new walking trails on Thursday.

YARMOUTH – The Town of Yarmouth along with Walmart Canada and Nova Scotia Environment hosted the Grand Opening of the Broad Brook Wetland Park on Thursday which included a tour of the site and a “branch cutting” ceremony.

Walmart Canada agreed to develop the green corridor and called on Inc. to be a part of the revitalization team; the project includes walking trails and interpretative panels that describe the wetland ecology of the area between Forest Street and Southeast Street. As well, several ponds and observation platforms were included.

Before the project, the site had been badly compromised – from pollution, upstream development and overgrowth from invasive species. However, its restoration has enhanced the quality of water flowing from it through Broad Brook and may even mitigate some flood risks due to storm runoff.

The Town of Yarmouth expressed their appreciation towards the outcome of the project; this spring saw vegetation already emerging on the trail embankment slopes and there was absolutely no erosion on the trails over the winter. The site is now home to wildlife and has become a place where people can enjoy nature and maintain a healthy lifestyle by using the trails.

APM President Duane Lamont says APM was pleased to be involved.

“It makes Yarmouth a better place for its residents and as well for its environment. APM is always looking towards the future and we know how important it is to fulfill our social responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint. We’re very proud to have been a part of this transformation and we’re looking ahead to similar initiatives.”
