APM unveils development in City neighbourhood

"Open House at Brighton Commons"

Charlottetown -- APM today announced the Official Opening of Brighton Commons, Charlottetown's newest residential development located in one of the City's most historic neighbourhoods.

Tim Banks, President of APM, led a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new model home recently constructed on site. Others involved in the ceremony included APM Vice President Brian Gillis, Charlottetown Mayor George MacDonald, and Provincial Minister of Education Jeff Lantz.

"We are pleased to see this project proceeding," said Mr. Lantz. "APM has done a great job in re-developing the site from its previous existence. New homes being built in the area means more children in the local schools. The whole community benefits."

The development, located at McGill Avenue in Charlottetown, was previously the site of the Dr. Eric Found Centre, a provincial health facility. The facility had become obsolete in recent years and, unfortunately, was no longer in usable condition. The Province and the City had been looking for new options for the property. APM was the successful bidder in a public tender for the re-development project.

Mayor MacDonald echoed Mr. Lantz in hailing APM's initiative: "The tax base of Charlottetown is increased with new construction," he said, "but more importantly, Brighton Commons will invigorate our city with new energy, population and investment. It is a great asset."

Consisting of 19 single family dwellings, Brighton Commons is planned to fit the style of the homes in the surrounding neighbourhood. Homes will have all the amenities of contemporary urban life, while using traditional building methods and materials.

"The model home really exemplifies a commitment to excellence in design and construction that will be a hallmark of the entire development," Mr. Gillis said. "It is a balance of heritage and state-of-the-art. But come and see it for yourself."

Following the ribbon-cutting, guests were invited to tour the model home. The Open House at the model home will continue July 19-27, 2002, Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A nominal fee of $2 will be charged to view the home with all proceeds going to the Charlottetown Boys and Girls Club.

"I know there is a lot of public interest in the development, so it’s nice that it can translate into a direct contribution to local young people," said Councillor Brown. "It’s a pleasure to extend a welcome to Brighton Commons and the investment it brings to the neighbourhood."
