Charlotte Court redevelopment nears completion

Jun 2 2011

The Charlotte Court redevelopment project is nearing completion with the anticipated move-in date set for early July, says Minister of Community Services, Seniors and Labour Janice Sherry. Minister Sherry recently participated in a tour of the new facility and is thrilled with the progress.

"I am pleased to announce that the Charlotte Court redevelopment project is on schedule as we look forward to this summers grand opening, said Minister Sherry. This state-of-the-art building has so much to offer new and existing Charlotte Court residents, and I am confident they will be pleased with their upgraded home. This project demonstrates Prince Edward Islands dedication to improving the lives of Island seniors."

The new three-storey, 48-unit building will replace the 45-year-old Charlotte Court building at 300 North River Road. It is being developed by Killam Properties, one of Canadas largest residential landlords.

Final touches are now being put in place on the new building. Roofing, siding and framing of the units is complete and all windows and doors are in place. As well, the installation of cupboards and flooring is well underway.

The new Charlotte Court building will feature several improvements and modernizations. Housing units will be nearly double the size of the existing units, and each unit will have a private patio. There will be additional community space including a large fitness room, card room and a common barbecue area.

Joe and Mary Doiron have lived at Charlotte Court since 2008 and they are excited to make the move into their new home this summer.

"It will be a treat to live in such a modernized building and a pleasure to have more available space," said Joe.

"A place to live that you can really call home," Mary added.

Of the 48 units, 36 will be home to low-income seniors and 12 have been specially designed for seniors living with disabilities. Charlotte Courts 29 current tenants will move into 26 of the new units along with 22 newcomers selected from the provincial waiting list.

"Our company is proud of the quality of product we will be delivering to the residents of Charlotte Court and we would like to thank the Island tradespeople who have worked hard through this tough winter to bring this quality project in on time," said Killam Director Tim Banks.

The current building is the oldest of its kind in Prince Edward Island and will be taken down following the opening of the new Charlotte Court.

Minister Sherry looks forward to further affordable seniors housing developments that will be completed in the coming year, including the new 34-unit seniors complex being built in Summerside.
