Welsh Owen Building Grand Opening Marks Historic Transformation

CHARLOTTETOWN – APM announced the grand opening of the Welsh Owen Building on Lower Queen Street today. Hundreds of visitors came out a Grand Opening event, touring the historic building’s complete transformation by APM, and celebrating the arrival of new tenants, including Electronic Arts (EA).

Formerly the iconic Kays Bros. Building, the Welsh Owen has long been considered a significant historical building on the Island; however, it was at risk for demolition because of a severe state of deterioration it had fallen into. APM purchased the property last year and undertook the project in an effort to preserve and revitalize the building. The Grand Opening showed a complete transformation of the building including leaving many impressed with the final result.

EA’s All Play label, which creates games for mobile devices and online environments, will bring studio operations from Bight Games and Other Ocean Interactive in Charlottetown to the Welsh Owen Building.

EA All Play Studio Operations Director Richard Turner says EA will lease the third and fourth floors of the building, providing enough room to accommodate the current teams with room to grow as needs arise. EA will officially move into the space on October 11, 2013.

His Honour Lieutenant Governor H. Frank Lewis, Premier Robert Ghiz and Innovation Minister Al Roach were on-hand for the announcement and discussed the historical significance of the building for Prince Edward Island and its bright future.

APM CEO Tim Banks says that the results of the Welsh Owen Building is something for every Islander to be proud of.
